Rancho Cordova PAL in partnership with Folsom Prison provides an opportunity for youth to observe, first hand, the lives of the inmates in the prison environment through the Youth Diversion Program (YDP).
YDP is a team, comprised of both staff and inmate sponsors, whose goal it is to reduce youth involvement in negative behavior through the promotion of self-awareness and positive alternatives. YDP IS NOT SCARED STRAIGHT; YDP does not judge, shame, humiliate, or force anyone to change. YDP’s primary objective is to help youth realize that there is so much more to life than they have ever imagined, and that even one small decision can lead to unintended consequences.
The youth will experience what the inmates experience on a daily basis. Through YDP, the youth will spend the day interacting with inmate sponsors, who have first-hand experiences in the mistakes that youth are struggling with in their lives. Through both one-on-one and group settings, the inmates discuss the negative effects of negative behavior. The goal is that youth learn this valuable life lesson through the experience of inmates rather than through their own actions.
YDP’s goal is only realized through the selfless contributions of all involved-sponsors, outside organizations, school districts, probation departments, law enforcement agencies, and many others. If you have any questions about YDP, contact us.
